| Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Bihar went together to watch Rajasthan |
[Feb. 23rd, 2008|02:35 am] |
This is my post to the journal nearly after a year's break !!!!! Hope to be regular......
Was taken by two of my old pals to watch the movie Jodhaa Akbar - my ticket was sponsored by one of them as I was not keen to see it, but only gave company. You can say that - Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Bihar went together to watch Rajasthan ! :D
My take on the movie - seemed a typical Bollywood masala movie - War scenes (those only worth watching), some Tarzan style gimmicks to tame a wild elephant, so called DESPERATE romantic - hence comedy scenes (Husband and wife trying to convince each other - the aim being physical relation in the end), saas-bahu jealousy (Ila Arun-Aishwarya Rai), how one's close associate can be a traitor, how to do administration and be in touch with juntaa. [Shankar's Nayak (Mudhalvan in Tamil) style] .
Somewhat a sarcastic take on current society maybe - related to communal fights (still happening), tax payers money going to the politicians khazana (in the movie, one religion has to pay taxes for going to yearly pilgrim it seems due to which Mughal empire earns more for its 'khazana' - royal treasury)... My IT work background - can't help saying the following ... someone over-shadowing decisions of Akbar (playing mostly advisory roles in the movie) being handed over a pink-slip (Being asked to go to Mecca - as good as retirement, resignation ) !!
The music was okay - Liked the 'sarod' strings piece whenever they were played - sounded pleasant. Otherwise it was typical ARR - sounding similar to here and there of his earlier works, no wonder I hadn't heard its audio before. The colors/ choreography in the song where Akbar of tax for religious pilgrim in few sequences looked beautiful. Not sure whats controversial about this movie regarding Jodhaa - neither I am concerned with Akbar's history... there is no 'acting' or 'story' for the movie by anyone !
I had one of the best times with friends - especially being one of the worst comment passers in the last row ... and being appreciated as well for the same by few folks sitting ahead - seems they too got bored with the film dragging along to nowhere ! |

| The North Indian (me) - appreciating Madras |
[Feb. 20th, 2007|02:00 pm] |
I found Bangalore to be a very dull place - I really don't know whether its usually like this or did I find it so because of the Cauvery issue - since I went there as a visitor. My mornings were usually spent waking up early around 5AM and I used to go for walking till Lalbaug and exploring that place. The trip in short - visited a cousin sister, met her after 8 long years. The last time I met her - I was almost the same age as her daughter is today! Also at Planet M Bangalore, I made a new friend - music really has no limits. The last evening I spent about an hour with my nephew - which was again very refreshing. I also met up and had a good time with an old email pal of mine - Gopal. Otherwise, the trip was boring enough. During one of the days at Bangalore - I had lunch at Lakshmi athai's place - whom I met after 5-6 years and I visited their home after 12 years. She happens to be my father's first cousin. While leaving my Periamma's home in the morning - I had told that I was sure that vettha-kozhambu will be in the menu ( known to most of the family - because of one of incidents with that food item with me somewhere in Rameswaram ) .
The vettha-kozhambu made by her - the taste literally reminded me of my late grandmother - Jayalakshmi, both - my Paati and this athai had apparently grown up together. I just could not stop appreciating it - because the lifestyle for past 2 years has been totally different - where taste buds had gone dead with having all types of vegeterian food - but this bought it back alive - and also reminded of how I thought that my grandmother nagged me every now and then those days to have food. The lunch was followed obviously by family talks - more so about my Paati :-)
Have been in Madras since Sunday morning - and have started to appreciate the place than what I used to complain during my visits earlier - which happened once in 4-5 years. Mylapore rocks for me so far - I find this place happening than earlier - maybe because I have the freedom to go around to places on own (which was not there earlier) and also that I appreciate art, music and enjoy meeting different people now !
I have been asking people around to accompany me to watch Veerasamy (Hehehe)- even ready to sponsor tickets - no one is ready to come though. Worst still - today's newspaper showed that its not being screened anywhere as of now. There is a festival coming up here called as Chennai Sangamam - from 21st Feb to 26th Feb 2007. I am going to attend few concerts there - so far have decided to go for the following concerts at Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore - since I do not want to travel to other places - 1) Akkarai sisters (violin) - 6:30AM - 21st Feb (Yes - am a fan of Akkarai Subbulakshmi - after I heard her in the album Krishna Lila by DJ Cheb i Sabbah about 15 months before where she has performed with Baby Sreeram and Party - just love the Violin solo track by her) 2) TM Krishna - 6:30PM - 21st Feb 3) Folk - Chenda and periya Melam - 5PM - 23rd Feb 4) Aruna Sairam - 6:30PM - 23rd Feb
In Bangalore too, I attended few concerts - the one I enjoyed most was the Hindustani vocal recital by Arti Ankalikar. Eklavya has released finally - the audio as well as movie. Hamsika's Chanda re song seems to be in news - her voice is being liked by many and my best wishes are there with her forever.
In few hours from now - am thinking of going to Marina beach this evening - and then it will be time to welcome the moon ... Chanda re ... chanda re.... dheere se muskaa ... hehehe

Today evening, I got a call from an unknown cell number which was of Mumbai. It were my nephews (aged 10 and 6) who were on the line, the younger one was on the phone and asked for me and when I asked him how he got my number, he replied that the elder one dialed the number. During the conversation, I thought that the number belonged to my cousin's wife (and I was right). The two brats, without her knowledge had called me up and both were making talks that the other one wanted to talk to me and they did talk few things about computer games etc they play... and when I asked them to handover the phone to my sister-in-law, they hesitated and told that she was talking with her friends, and then eventually I asked them to get back to their school homeworks and not waste time on phone.
It reminded me of my own ventures some 10 years ago, when I used to use the landline at my home to make calls without the knowledge of my parents (who'd found it out later, and gave me good 'affectionate' treatment).
After wondering whom to inform about this, I informed their mother an hour later, who in-turn thought that they called me up from their landline and I explained to her that it was from her cell though she said she had locked the keypad. She then recited to me that she too has been wondering how her pre-paid balance goes low inspite of her not using the cell, so this is the reason maybe. I really don't know since when these kids are doing this 'stuff'
I requested my sister-in-law not to be very harsh to them, and to keep a check so that they do not repeat it often, once a while is okay. I know the kids might be finding it as fun now, so did I some 10-12 years ago. This is the initial stage for those kids as well, I felt as if I revisited my childhood. No wonder they do trouble me like hell whenever they are around and only make me realise how much I troubled their father - my cousin brother. But then, I consider this as part of growing-up.
Also sometime in 2005, when I visited my brother's place, these kids narrated to me about one of their ventures. The younger one used to throw away bread toasts, chapatis and whatever given to him for breakfast into a empty flower vase which was kept as a show piece at their home, and later he used to go to his mother and shout, "Mummy, FINISH" and go to school/play. I did enjoy listening to all of it, but I informed their mother before leaving and keep a check on same, since if some bad odour started coming out of the vase later, and my brother comes to know of it - the kids will be subject to 'affectionate' treatment
Am sure, many of you reading this might have done all this, or much more greater ventures in childhood! |

| In concert - Smt. Girija Devi (Benaras gharana) |
[Nov. 7th, 2006|10:59 pm] |
Its been some 4 days that I picked up the album, " Confluence: Meeting of minds and melodies" by Smt. Girija Devi and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and was getting addicted to her voice, and today, the Orkut community by name of Pune Music Circle had a post about a concert by Girija Devi... at the Alpabachath Bhavan, Pune. So inspite of having bad health throughout the day, I went for the concert and it was worth it. Reaching the concert hall about half hour before the concert was to start, I found myself to be a lonely young creature amidst many kezha gumbals. But later, there was some young crowd entering as well. The concert started at around 7PM, and there was the regular intro speech about her childhood, achievements, awards etc. It was a good change for me... after a long time... attended a music concert :-) |

Its been almost 5 years to the 9/11 incident now, and I've seen 3 movies based in and around the attack, thats - Farheneit 9/11, United 93 and now World Trade Center.
I saw the movie World Trade Center yesterday, it was a good movie about the survivors of the 9/11 attacks. I found some parts of the movie to be similar to Tom Hanks starrer Cast Away, where the only thing one needs to do is talk and talk, rather have someone to talk when you are caught amidst nowhere (in this movie, its the rubbles and dust). The movie showcased some good moments as well, when an American (white) woman consoles a black woman that her son will be back in the hospital scenes.
When the movie got over, as usual our Indian junta was exchanging views like - 'So sad', 'how could they do this', which is nothing but the after-effect of any movie they watch (be it English or Hindi). They will never care for what all incidents have so far happened in their own country, thats because patriotism in India was, and is still only revolving around the Indian cricket team.
We have so many bomb blasts and attacks (on Parliament, Aksardham (gujarat) or even the Godhra riots) in India, all our film makers have to go through is to show something else than what the truth is, like the Govind Nihalani's movie DEV, he had to make so many changes before releasing it with an 'A' certificate. The movie Black Friday, about 1993 Bombay blasts, is yet to see a Friday when it will get released (though most people who want to see it, have already seen it somehow). Only what we get to see is a multi-starrer movie like Border or LOC Kargil with unwanted actresses and songs featured in the same, only making it difficult to understand what the movie is about, the war or the warrior's love story.
Too much of ranting... time to get back to WORK!

Posting to LJ after a very long time!!!
Yesterday, I was taken along by my friends at office to watch the new Bollywood movie DON... Inspired by one of the dialogues from the movie itself... when DON says... " Gyaarah mulkon ki police ko DON ki talaash hai... Lekin DON ko pakadna mushkil hi nahi... Naamumkin hai "
All I could think, throughout ...... while watching the movie was, " Gyaarah mulkon mein DON release hua hai, lekin DON ko dekhna aur jhelna mushkil hi nahi... Naamumkin hai " |

Music update: Hooked on to Ganesh-Kumaresh's scores from the movie Dance Like a Man, saw Guitar Prasanna's concert on TV some 2 weeks back, recorded it using the digital camera, yet to do post processing of it. The hole created because of the purchase of, Audio as well as VCD of 'Dance like A man', as well as VCD of Santosh Sivan's movie Navarasa. The Wikipedia link for Navarasa. Also got an jugalbandhi concert of Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande (vocals) and Biswajit Roy Chowdhary (Sarod) which was recorded live during Swarutsav 2001. other update: Tired of filling forms on the first day of job, I've not filled so many forms even when in college. Was planning to see Yun Hota To Kya Hota, but haven't seen it yet. Else, rains dominate, the potholes rule in Pune! |

Films have no effect on people, other than people aping hair styles & costumes of the actors. Some folks claimed that the film 'Rang de Basanti' had some positive effect on the people. I think in the negative, if at all it had an effect, Mr. Arjun Singh should have been dead by now. |

Listening to this song (Itna Lamba Kash Lo Yaaron) after about 4 years. Its from the movie Hu Tu Tu. The movie is no doubt a masterpiece, its been about 2 years I watched the movie now (Have seen it 3-4 times). The lyrics of the song can be found here. There is a question asked by Sunil Shetty to Tabu during the song, which is - ' Charas pehle aayi ya corruption ?' Tabu's answer is Charas - " kyunki charas mein nasha hai, nashe mein power hai, power mein corruption hai " ! :)) My plans of going to Mumbai seems doubtful now, its raining since last 24 hours here and Mumbai as well, and there is a forecast of heavy rainfull for next 48 hours :( |

Haven't updated the journal for a long time now. This is one funny blog I've come across recently named as The Insignificant Other. Enjoy reading it. I have plans of going to Mumbai next weekend, yes, heard the computer there at my aunt's place is unwell (again). So thinking, if I am free, shall go and fix it as well as attend the house-warming ceremony of my cousins' new flat. Hoping that I will get some more music from there this time!
D K Pattammal was honored last week in Bangalore, with a 'Sangeetha Saraswathi Award' at Chowdiah Hall in Malleswaram, which followed ahead with a concert by Nithyashree Mahadevan. I saw that event telecasted on a channel called Sanskar last evening (While playing with the remote as usual). The concert telecast was cut in between for some darshan of the day program, it was a religious channel. The song which Nithyashree rendered (the one telecasted) was Gajavandhana or something like that. Apparently, after reading the blog (I've mentioned in the start) last night, have got affected with short time memory loss. DKP was not present for the event, Nithyashree collected the award on her behalf. So, sunson did not miss, seeing DKP. :) Got an album called Fluid - Flute Grooves by Naveen some days back. Naveen was the architect of the famous 'Bombay theme' from Mani Ratnam's movie Bombay composed-arranged by A R Rahman. Even in the song 'Pal Pal Hai Bhari' from Swades, he'd done amazing work. The album starts with the track 'Fluid' which is the title track, it sounds good with a lot of techno and synth beats, then it is followed by a flute rendition of the 'Bombay theme' (mentioned above), also the album features a flute rendition of Jiya Jale from Dil Se. There is a track called 'You & I' with beautiful lyrics promoting world peace, with kids (Naveen's own children) singing in it, the track has become one of my favorites recently! Another track called 'Chennai Rains' sounds similar to parts of the song 'Chand Aaya hai' (the dandiya song) from Dil Hi Dil mein (It was Kadhalar Dinam in Tamil). The other tracks are Mohana, Symphony, First Light and Essence. 'Essence' is a good track, which starts with a slow pace and then has a catchy tune! Overall, the album's worth the buy! |

Me and Venkat were discussing about the fact that the song 'Jhalak Dikhlaa jaa' song by Himesh Reshamiya has been banned in Gujarat since the folks in that village feared that people from the grave came as ghosts after playing that song. After sometime, I made up the following one-liner...
Himesh Reshammiya is a nasanal (Read: national) sensation. What say? |
